A major policy change at Britain's largest airport has the potential to make the airport's business travellers even more miserable.
Vueling, the Spanish airline whose flights operate from Luton Airport, has been given the green light to charge passengers based on how far they travel by plane.
For example, flights from London to Madrid via Vueling will cost an extra £39.10 if you're in economy class, a £42.10 extra if you're in premium economy and a staggering £44.10 extra if you're in business class.
All three classes are currently charged £39.10, so if you're in one of those three classes, you can expect to pay more than £40 for your flight.
As Luton is such a big airport, it's fair to say a lot of people use it. In fact, almost 70% of British Airways' long-haul flights from Luton Airport arrive at London's Heathrow.
That means that if you're lucky enough to get to fly out of Heathrow, which is usually easier than being able to get to fly out of Luton, you can expect to pay more to fly with British Airways.
The reason Vueling and other airlines have the ability to charge for seats in premium and business class is because Heathrow is a hub airport. That means if you're flying to another hub airport, such as Gatwick or Manchester, or to a non-hub, such as Luton, you're more likely to be charged for the premium or business class seat.

The reason it's easier to charge more for your flight from Heathrow is because you're more likely to be flying in a premium or business class seat. In a non-hub airport, you're more likely to be charged a similar price for a seat in premium or business class.
Is that the way it has to be?
No. In fact, the introduction of a hub airport charge is something that European Airlines have been calling for for several years.
A hub airport charge means that if you're going to the same destination as someone on a different airline, you're more likely to be charged extra for your flight.
